Cap Maritime O Vale de Hemel-en-Aarde is one of the most exciting sites for growing Charnonnay and Pinot Noir in South Africa. Cap Maritime sits atop a ridge that separates the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde appellation from the Valley. It is here that we strive to create wines that capture the essence of their origin while embodying the style we aspire to. With this vintage, the opportunity arose to work with outstanding vines in the Elandskloof, Overberg, and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge appellations, giving birth to our coastal wines, resulting from a blend of these selected parcels, classified as South Coast origin. Through these wines, winemaker Gottfried Mocke seeks to provide youthful accessibility while staying true to the house style. His preference for highlighting texture and perfumed characteristics over the opulence of primary fruit is a distinctive hallmark of his wines. The coastal region Pinot Noir grapes were hand-harvested and selected in small boxes before being transported in a refrigerated truck to our cellar in Franschhoek. In the cellar, a careful sorting process ensured that only healthy, whole clusters were transferred to cement fermentation tanks. The majority of the grapes were destemmed, leaving about 25% of whole bunches intact, with no additions. After spontaneous fermentation, the juice was transferred to 225-litre French oak barrels for a 12‑month maturation period. Awards 92/100 Philippe Gaillard (2021)
