Thomas Reynolds, a sailor and English trader, arrived in Portugal in 1820, drawn by the wine trade, and had two sons, Thomas and Robert. From Porto he supplied his London warehouse with Iberian products. In 1838 they entered the cork industry in Spain, expanding into Portugal and eventually settling in Estremoz. After the family moved to New Zealand, Robert stayed in Estremoz to run the business, rapidly growing it by acquiring new lands and producing quality wines—a task he pursued with particular zeal and passion. Alentejo became the definitive birthplace of the Portuguese Reynolds, with Robert as the family patriarch. From this cradle came Robert’s firstborn, Robert Rafael, and subsequently Carlos. Carlos had a first daughter named Gloria, Gloria Reynolds. In her honour, and that of all her ancestors who lived in Alentejo, Julian, Gloria’s son, produces a quality wine named after his mother – Gloria Reynolds. (Illustrative image only)
