This Carm Reserva from Casa Agricola Roboredo Madeira clearly had a spirited chat with the schist and clay of the Douro Superior – you can really taste it. Produced on a quinta with a history stretching back to the 19th century, the wine is the result of a vineyard that’s been embracing biodynamic practices since 1966 and, judging by the flavour, seems to have enjoyed a good thermal shock! The nose reveals an intense burst of wild berries, beautifully balanced with a touch of liquorice – a detail that certainly lends it a sophisticated air. On the palate, it’s a concentrated, warm wine with firm tannins, yet remarkably smooth, almost like a comforting hug. The finish is long and persistent, with the raw power of the Douro Superior expressed with considerable elegance. It’s a fantastic match for grilled beef, wouldn't you agree?
