This Ermelinda Freitas Merlot Reserva from the Setúbal Peninsula is a wine that immediately announces itself with intensely ripe black fruit – specifically plum and blackberry – alongside a subtle hint of peppercorn that practically begs for a picnic. It boasts a substantial body, with remarkably velvety tannins suggesting considerable contemplation, and a lingering finish that’s delightfully conversational. Rumour has it it spent time in oak barrels, though I suspect a deeper connection to the terroir of Setúbal played a far more significant role. Pairs beautifully with duck breast, undoubtedly.
