This Reserva from Caves Santa Marta is a lovely tribute to Douro tradition. The ruby hue delivers, and the nose reveals ripe black fruit, with a sophisticated touch of American oak – as one might expect. On the palate, it’s full-bodied with a velvety texture – those tannins are wonderfully smooth and inviting – hinting at a wine with a considerable age. The finish is remarkably persistent, lingering with Touriga Nacional and Aragonez, the key grapes of this region, undoubtedly giving it a truly distinctive character. Wonderful with a hearty beef roast, I’d say.
