Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João began as a family business that initially dealt in fine Douro wines and liqueurs. It is now the oldest still‑operating family winery in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the prohibition of port wine production outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company started trading table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, it launched one of Bairrada’s most celebrated wine brands – “Frei João” – and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” label from the demarcated Dão region.
