Description

Château d'Yquem – Considered the world's greatest white wine The Château d'Yquem wine comes from a small slope that benefits from an exceptional microclimate and terroir. The vineyard, comprising no fewer than 150 plots of varied soils, is pampered throughout the year: each vine receives an average of 50 treatments annually. Selection is particularly rigorous at Yquem; it is often said that a single vine yields only one glass of wine. The grapes are harvested in a minimum of four passes (seven in 1997!) to pick them at perfect ripeness, impacted by noble rot. The estate also produces a dry white wine, Y d'Yquem, from grapes unaffected by botrytis cinerea. In some years the entire harvest is downgraded (no Yquem was produced in 1910, 1915, 1930, 1951, 1952, 1964, 1972, 1974, 1992, and 2012). The wine is aged for up to 42 months in new barrels. The hot and dry conditions of February and March precede a very humid and cool period at the start of the vegetative phase. Although the milder climate at the beginning of June encouraged rapid flowering, a heat wave settled at the end of the month and lasted until almost August 15. These high temperatures ensured the rapid development of the vines, compensating for the slight delay at the start of the cycle. On July 26, a rare intensity rainfall episode replenished the soil’s water reserves. The hot and dry weather until harvest was ideal for refining the grapes’ perfect ripening. The 2019 harvest of Château d'Yquem began on October 10, benefiting from favorable conditions over five days. The harvest produced an exceptional vintage that combines fruity expression, freshness, and concentration.
