Lafite has a soul, a beautiful, generous, and gentle soul. Lafite turns raw earth into heaven. Lafite is harmony—a harmony between man and nature—because without our magnificent vintners nothing would be achieved. Baron Eric de Rothschild. In 1815, Guillaume Lawton described Château Lafite: “I consider it the most elegant and delicate, with the finest substance among the three (premier crus).” The location of its vines is one of the best in the Médoc. In 1855, the château was classified as Premier Grand Cru in the famous classification prepared for that year’s Universal Exhibition. Abundant winter rains replenished the underground water levels; the end of the wet, cold winter was marked by a very early break. The temperatures in March and April were quite high, which was good for growth. From then until August, the weather was gray and mild, without extremes. Full maturation of sugars, tannins, and skins was only achieved 125 days after flowering—a longer growing season than usual in a year with 13 lunar cycles.
