In 1815, Guillaume Lawton remarked on Château Lafite: “I consider it the most elegant and delicate, with the best substance among the three (premier crus).” The vineyard’s location is one of the finest in the Médoc. In 1855, the château was classified as Premier Grand Cru in the renowned classification prepared for that year’s Universal Exhibition. Abundant winter rains replenished the underground water tables, and the wet, cold winter ended with an early thaw. High temperatures in March and April were beneficial for vine growth. From then until August, the weather was gray and mild, free of extremes. Fortunately, from early September onward, the weather has been good and stable, allowing the grapes to mature peacefully. Full development of sugars, tannins, and skins was achieved only 125 days after flowering—an unusually long growing season for a year with thirteen lunar cycles.
