Description

The Château was purchased in 1863 by Baron Nathaniel Rothschild, who immediately changed its name from Château Mouton de Pauillac to its current name, Château Mouton Rothschild. It survived several turbulent periods until 1922, when Philippe de Rothschild took the reins of the estate, and it rose from the ashes with its first bottling in 1924. From the 1945 harvest onward, already regarded as a great wine, every label has been illustrated by famous contemporary artists—such as Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and others. As recognition of its excellence, Château Mouton was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the elite of Médoc wines. Its wines are powerful and rich yet possess a sense of finesse and a velvety texture when aged. They are truly magnificent and unforgettable. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot grapes in proportions that vary from year to year, with Cabernet Sauvignon always the dominant variety. Over the years many wines have been born in this house, and countless stories have unfolded within the walls of the magnificent Château.
