Château was purchased in 1863 by Baron Nathaniel Rothschild, who immediately changed its name from Château Mouton de Pauillac to its current name, Château Mouton Rothschild. It survived a few turbulent periods until 1922, when Philippe de Rothschild took the reins of the estate, and the château was reborn from the ashes with its first bottling in 1924. From the 1945 harvest onward, already with a Mouton status in the ranks of great wines, all labels began to be illustrated by famous contemporary artists—such as Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and others. As a recognition of its greatness, Château Mouton was elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the elite of Médoc wines. Its wines are powerful and rich yet possess a sense of finesse and a velvety texture when aged. They are truly magnificent and unforgettable wines. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, in proportions that vary year to year, with Cabernet Sauvignon always in the majority. Many wines have been born at this house over the years, and many stories have passed through the gates of the magnificent château. The wines speak for themselves; if not, they are among the most sought-after in the world, as many of them are among the best wines ever made worldwide. (Illustrative image only)
