Château Pontet‑Canet Due to the summer drought, the grapes were plentiful yet remained rather small, which contributed to the density and concentration. High temperatures in August and September allowed for slow, excellent ripening, so the harvest began with Merlot on 26 September and continued in perfect condition until 14 October. At the winery, each variety and each plot were vinified separately, as is usual, to allow their intrinsic character to shine through. The now‑blended wines display a remarkable colour, intense aromas of fruit and spices, and a dense texture of very rich, well-rounded tannins. Their density and substance make the 2016 vintage comparable to the finest so far this century. Maturation: 55 % in new French oak barrels, 35 % in amphorae, and the remainder of the wine in one‑year‑old barrels. Awards 99 / 100 – Antonio Galloni; 97 / 100 – James Suckling; 17.5 / 20 – Jancis Robinson Allergen information Contains sulfites.
