The noble Bosq family began cultivating grapes in 1365. The estate was bought in the eighteenth century by the Scotsman George Smith, who gave his name to the property. After the acquisition, he began exporting the wine to England in his own ships, gaining fame in this way. In 1842, Duffour‑Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux and an enthusiastic viticulturist, inherited Château Smith Haut Lafitte from his mother and elevated the wine to the level of Grand Cru Exceptionnel. Years later, the wine distributor Louis Eschenauer decided to buy the estate in 1958. Decades later, the Cathiard family fell in love with Château Smith Haut Lafitte, ultimately acquiring it in 1990. Their excellent tradition continued, and the family’s motto is “doing everything possible so that each red and white harvest is worthy of our magnificent terroir.” Made from 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 % Merlot aged in 20 % new barrels, Le Petit Haut Lafitte 2018 has a medium‑to‑deep garnet colour and expressive notes of crushed black plums, fresh blackberries with a subtle aroma of dark chocolate, cinnamon stick and unsmoked cigars. On the palate it is full‑bodied, bursting with juicy dark fruit, framed by fine tannins and well‑integrated freshness, finishing with a herbal lift. (illustrative image only)
