In November 1998, the Symington family invited Bruno Prats to join a new project: to produce a large, non‑fortified wine from the Douro. The project materialised in 1999 with the creation of PRATS & SYMINGTON Limited, a joint‑venture between the two families. Some experimental vinifications that first year helped select the best parcels and the most suitable grapes for the endeavour. The 2000 harvest was the first to be marketed as CHRYSEIA. CHRYSEIA was one of the pioneers of the modern revival of unfortified DOURO DOC wines, now widely recognised. The name, meaning “of gold” in classical Greek—as well as the Portuguese name for the river—remains true to a very distinctive style. It is characterised by elegance and balance, with depth without heaviness and a full body that is not aggressive. CHRYSEIA represents the meeting of Portugal’s noble tradition with a equally rich Bordeaux heritage, signalling a new modernity.
