Description

The Avril family has been established in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the 17th century. It was in 1896 that the first harvest of Clos des Papes was produced under the initiative of the great-grandfather of the estate's current owner, Paul-Vincent Avril. After having worked on the creation of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in 1936, he passed the business on to his son, Régis Avril, so that he could continue his work. The latter made Clos des Papes known abroad, where exports now account for 75% of sales. Today, the vineyards cover a total area of 32 hectares, of which 29 hectares are planted with red grape varieties, notably Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, and 3 hectares with white varieties, including Grenache Blanc. The meticulous care given to the vineyards makes Clos des Papes one of the most esteemed French wines in the world.
