Founded in 1889, the Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal, colloquially known as the “Real Vinícola,” initially sparked confusion between the two Royal Companies—the new one and the old Royal Company of Porto Wine. Through popular speech and commercial slang, the Pombalina Real Companhia, founded in 1756, began to be called the “Old Royal Company” and to use that designation as a trade name. The centenary Real Vinícola, established under the patronage of the Marquess of Pombal, became a purely patrimonial enterprise over the years and was eventually acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
