Founded in 1889, the Royal Vine Company of Northern Portugal—colloquially known as the “Royal Winery”—caused a great confusion at its inception between the two Royal Companies: the new and the old Royal Company of Port Wines. It was through the people’s voice and commercial slang that the Pombaline Royal Company, founded in 1756, began to be called the “Old Royal Company” and to use that name as a brand. The century‑old Royal Winery, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, became over time a purely patrimonial society, later acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, which owns major Port wine brands such as Taylor’s.
