In 1988, a Dane and an American couple set sail in a sailboat in search of a place to start a family, plant a vineyard and produce wine. A fair‑tale dream that sparked the beginning of Cortes de Cima’s story, now one of Portugal’s leading wineries. Located in Vidigueira, Cortes de Cima is a family estate run daily by Hans and Carrie Jorgensen, covering 140 hectares of vines planted with Aragonês, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Petit Verdot, Antão Vaz and Verdelho. The oldest vines were planted in 1991, when Syrah was not yet permitted by regional regulations. Still, Hans, convinced that the climate and soil were ideal for this Rhône variety, produced the first unlicensed Syrah in 1998, sold under the name Incógnito, which quickly gained fame in Portugal and earned medals in London, Brussels and Bordeaux.
