In 1988, a couple made up of a Dane and an American set off on a sailboat in search of a place to raise a family, plant a vineyard, and make wine. It was a fairy-tale dream that marked the beginning of the story of Cortes de Cima, today one of Portugal's leading wineries. Located in Vidigueira, Cortes de Cima is a family estate run day to day by Hans and Carrie Jorgensen. It covers 140 hectares of vineyards planted with the Aragonês, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Petit Verdot, Antão Vaz, and Verdelho grape varieties. The oldest vines were planted in 1991, when Syrah was not permitted by the region's regulations. Even so, Hans, convinced that the climate and soil were ideal for this Rhône variety, created the first Syrah wine, which was not legalized. Produced in 1998 and sold under the name Incógnito, it quickly gained fame in Portugal and won medals in London, Brussels, and Bordeaux. (image for illustrative purposes only)
