This is the most emblematic wine of Herdade do Mouchão, made predominantly from the Alicante Bouschet grape, which has found in this terroir unique characteristics that give it a distinctive character. After fermentation in stone vats, it ages in Portuguese oak and mahogany barrels for at least four years, reinforcing its intensity, character and robustness, before undergoing a further stage of at least 18 months in bottle. With a deep, concentrated colour, it is a wine marked by spices, especially suited to ageing, as its structure, provided by the tannins, is unique and ideal for long maturation. In the early 19th century, Thomas Reynolds moved to the Alentejo region with the aim of the cork business. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds acquired Herdade do Mouchão for wine production. In 1901 the first vines were planted, and in 1929 the construction of a traditional cellar and a distillery began, which still today produces Mouchão aguardente. Today, Herdade do Mouchão is still managed and worked by descendants of the original family, and the entire winemaking process remains practically unchanged, preserving the traditional hand‑harvest and fermentation of grapes in stone vats, using foot‑crushing. These techniques and the whole success story of Herdade do Mouchão make this winery so close to the wines of old. (illustrative image)
