In 1988, a couple consisting of a Dane and an American set sail on a sailboat in search of a place to start a family, plant a vineyard, and make wine. A fairy‑tale dream that sparked the beginning of the Cortes de Cima story, now one of Portugal’s leading wineries. Located in Vidigueira, Cortes de Cima is a family‑run estate overseen daily by Hans and Carrie Jorgensen, covering 140 hectares of vines planted with Aragonês, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Petit Verdot, Antão Vaz and Verdelho. The oldest vines were planted in 1991, when Syrah was not yet permitted by regional regulations. Still, convinced that the climate and soil were ideal for this Rhône variety, Hans produced the first non‑licensed Syrah in 1998, marketed under the name Incógnito, which quickly gained fame in Portugal and earned medals in London, Brussels and Bordeaux.
