Prepare yourself for a showdown of epic proportions. Cos d’Estournel is taking on the big names of the Médoc, and for good reason. Rumour has it the border with Château Lafite influences the outcome, but this wine, now under the guidance of Aymeric de Gironde (formerly of Pichon Baron), is displaying an ambition that rivals Léoville Lascases and the like. Harvested in 2016 – conditions so favourable even the most sceptical would declare “incredible!” – the secret lies in a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, nurtured on a clay terroir bravely resisting the Girondine droughts. Maturation in new oak barrels (60% of them, for a touch of luxury) and the winery’s state-of-the-art gravity flow system (100% – no pumps, how decadent!) are testaments to this producer’s drive. As praised by critics Robert Parker, James Suckling and Lisa Perroti-Brown, this is simply a star. Pair with a perfectly grilled steak and prepare for an experience that will redefine your palate.
