This Costa Boal Tinto Cao is a proper test of mettle – all-foot treading, relentless work in the lagar… like a delivery on a particularly urgent mission! The extended barrel aging (16 months – don’t even get me started!) lends a wonderfully smooth finish, but trust me, those tannins are still very much alive, practically begging for a good grilled steak. The result is a remarkably balanced wine, hinting at the 17.5 points awarded by Grandes Escolhas, with a floral nose and spice notes that linger delightfully on the palate. A genuinely compelling wine for those who appreciate the honest character of the Douro.
