This Maynard’s LBV, born from a classic Dão blend of Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Aragnose and Tinto Cão, is a reminder that even the relentless heat of 2017 couldn’t entirely quell the Douro’s capacity for intensely flavoured wines. Harvested early to preserve freshness, the grapes were meticulously chilled before a prolonged maceration – boosted with a splash of grape brandy, naturally – unlocked a remarkable depth of colour and flavour. A six-year aging in oak balseiros has only refined this already complex wine. It’s a seriously indulgent bottle, best enjoyed with a generous wedge of baked Brie and a tangy Balsamic Chutney.
