La Chapelle, whose vineyards have been planted on the Hermitage slopes for centuries, owes its reputation to the excellence of its wines and its legendary setting. For a legend to be born, a knight is needed. In 1224, the knight Henri‑Gaspard de Sterimberg, returning from the Crusades, settled on the hill and built a small chapel. There he planted a few Syrah vines, which express themselves most naturally in this terroir. Since 1919, on these steep, stony slopes where only the hand of man can intervene, the Jaboulet family, and later the Frey family, have taken over the cultivation of the vines.
