Founded in 1920 by Deonilde Freitas, the winery was later carried on by Germana Freitas and then by Ermelinda Freitas, always paying special attention to wine. From the first generation, the house has focused on the quality of its vines and wines, which were initially produced and sold in bulk without a brand name. It was under the current management of Leonor Freitas that a major change took place, and in 1997 a new cycle began for this long‑standing family company, with the first wine produced and bottled under the name Casa Ermelinda Freitas.
