Dr. Loosen Erdener Prälat [air-din-er pray-laht] means the Bishop of Erden. This vineyard, which produces some of the finest wines of the Mosel River valley, is a small parcel of perfection. From its south-facing slopes, with red slate soil and an extraordinarily warm microclimate, come wines of unmatched power and nobility. The exposure of the vines, combined with the warming effect of the river and the towering cliffs that surround it, ensures exceptional ripeness in every vintage. The Grosses Gewächs Réserve (Grand Cru) wines come from the best parcels of very old, ungrafted vines. The grapes are carefully selected, gently processed, and fermented and aged in oak barrels, then remain on their lees for 24 months without bâtonnage, in traditional Fuder casks. The wines are then kept in bottle for a further 24 months before release. This extended maturation brings an extra dimension of finesse and balance to the wine. James Suckling, on the 2015 vintage: "This dry Mosel masterpiece is a sleeping giant, just beginning to awaken, but it has decades of life ahead of it. Extremely deep and concentrated, yet no less finely delineated, it is so complex that one could spend hours studying all its spicy details. Yet the ripe mango note that dominates the foreground is also captivating. The best wine in this category (long-aged GGs) made so far in Germany! Drink or hold."
