This “Escondido” appears to have gotten a little carried away with its youth. While promising notes of spice and chocolate linger, the colour is almost a ghost of what it could have been. The Mediterranean Syrah and Bordeaux Merlot, with their usual minty freshness, struggle to fully emerge, whilst the Touriga Nacional attempts to bring a touch of bergamot, as if desperately trying to balance the recipe. The producer has clearly favoured a more conservative approach, resulting in an elegant wine, but with a noticeable astringency that prevents it from realising its full potential. A lingering bitter note of oak persists, and overall, it’s a refreshingly, albeit slightly pretentious, wine for one that hasn't quite grasped its own power. Best paired with a good steak, nothing too elaborate.
