This Reserva from Real Companhia Velha certainly makes a statement – a full-bodied dive into the Douro, if you will. Young Touriga Nacional and Franca, generously aged in new wood, unleash a frankly exuberant burst of ripe red fruit, subtly laced with vanilla that could benefit from a touch of restraint. The result is a wine with impressively smooth tannins, almost as if they're gently embracing the palate, and a finish that, frankly, lingers a little *too* stubbornly. Best enjoyed with a hearty roast, perhaps, to tame the exuberance – and a generous helping of black pepper, naturellement.
