The area now known as Chianti Rufina was defined by a 1716 decree that set out four production zones in Tuscany, each entitled to market wines under its place of origin: Pomino, Valdarno, Caremignano, and Chianti. In 1967 Chianti Rufina received DOC status and was promoted to DOCG in 1984. Today it is the smallest Chianti zone, covering 750 hectares. Due to the area's unique characteristics, an independent denomination was proposed in the 1970s—a goal that its producers still pursue to this day.
