Founded in 1751, Ferreira has always been synonymous with high‑quality Portuguese wine. Its story intertwines with the evolution of the Demarcated Douro Region, set up in 1756, and its Port and still wines. Years later, the family business came under the stewardship of Antónia Adelaide, widow of António Bernardo II. Known for her exceptional energy and rare commercial acumen, she gave a substantial boost to Douro viticulture and pioneered a notable social‑assistance program in the area. Upon her passing, the company became a limited‑share partnership and entered a new expansion phase while retaining its core values. These principles carried Ferreira into the present day and were instrumental in creating iconic wines such as the legendary Barca Velha in the 1950s. Since 1987, under the management of Sogrape Vinhos, the firm has led the national Port market and continues to showcase prestigious labels like Quinta da Leda.
