Since 1751, Ferreira has always been synonymous with high‑quality Portuguese wine. Its history intertwines with the evolution of the Demarcated Douro Region, defined in 1756, and its Ports and still wines. Years later, the family business came under the management of Antónia Adelaide, widow of António Bernardo II. Renowned for her exceptional energy and rare commercial talent, she gave viticulture in the Douro a major boost and developed a notable social‑assistance initiative in the area. After her death, the company became a limited partnership and entered a new expansion phase, always preserving its core values. These values have carried Ferreira to the present day and were key to creating wines such as the legendary Barca Velha in the 1950s. Since 1987, under the stewardship of Sogrape Vinhos—which has come to dominate the national Port market and introduced prestigious brands such as Quinta da Leda—Ferreira continues to thrive.
