Gaja Winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja, great‑great‑grandfather of Angelo Gaja, in 1859. The winery remained in the family’s possession and was operated by four generations of the Gaja family. It is located in the Barbaresco and Barolo districts of Piedmont. In 1994 they purchased their first Tuscan wine property, Pieve di Santa Restituta, where 40 hectares are planted with Sangiovese and two Brunello di Montalcino wines are produced. In 1996 Gaja acquired a second Tuscan estate called Ca’Marcanda, situated in Castagneto Carducci in Bolgheri. Ca’Marcanda focuses on international grape varieties, with 150 hectares of the estate planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. (illustrative image)
