Marcel Guigal is an unmistakable name in the global wine scene—a true colossus, if you will. While many producers boast centuries of history, the Guigal house was founded much later, by its founder Etienne Guigal in 1949, establishing vineyards in Ampuis, a small village that oozes Rhône wine. Marcel joined the company in 1961 and entered a dizzying spiral of success, propelled by acquisitions of historic estates such as Grippat, a fabulous producer in Saint‑Joseph and Hermitage, which owned vineyards in spectacular locations. What’s certain is that he became the most famous producer of Côte‑Rôtie and one of the most celebrated winemakers worldwide. He owns the “La La’s,” his three flagship wines from Côte‑Rôtie: La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne. While the quality of his wines has played a major part in building his reputation, a portion is also due to the world’s most influential wine critic, Robert Parker, who has awarded him countless perfect scores.
