The Maroteira Estate lies at the foot of Serra D'Ossa and covers 540 hectares, all of which have been owned by the same Anglo‑Portuguese family for five generations since the mid‑nineteenth century. At that time, Robert Reynolds invested in the Alentejano spruce stand to satisfy the needs of the Port wine industry in northern Portugal, and for roughly 150 years the estate focused on cork and livestock. It was only in 2000 that Philip Mollet, the current owner and manager, revolutionised the property’s strategy by planting vines. Since then the estate has produced excellent Alentejo wines centred on its preferred variety, Syrah. The vineyard spans 15 hectares planted on clay‑limestone soils, which give the wines the genuine character of Alentejo.
