Description

Herdade do Esporão With a contemporary style, an elegant and intense profile, the white wine Defesa do Esporão reveals the character of carefully selected and well‑defined plots in the Alentejo region, inspired by Portugal’s history. In the 13th century, D. João de Aboim, a descendant of Egas Moniz and a central figure during the reign of King D. Afonso III, founded Defesa do Esporão from several territories donated by the municipalities of Monsaraz and Portel, making it one of the oldest estates in southern Portugal. The estate became a key example of this type of property linked to the formation of Portugal during the Christian reconquest of the south. Its boundaries, defined by a charter at the end of the 13th century and preserved in the Torre do Tombo, have remained unchanged to this day, embodying centuries of agrosilvopastoral practices. These practices, based on biodiversity conservation and land multifunctionality, continue to be adopted by Esporão as a sound strategy for ecosystem protection. The 2022 growing season was dry. During the vegetative rest period (autumn‑winter) and spring, mild temperatures and low rainfall were recorded. In the vines, budburst was early, and moderate temperatures accelerated vegetative development. Very high temperatures and water scarcity in summer produced uneven ripening among the varieties, necessitating a precision harvest focused on expressing each grape’s character. Vinification: The vines have an average age of 20 years and are planted on granitic/xistitic soils with a friable loamy structure. Harvest is mechanical, with grape cooling, vacuum pressing, cold must settling, and fermentation in stainless‑steel tanks at controlled temperatures for 15 days. Bottling occurred in April 2023. Enology: Sandra Alves & Teresa Gaspar. Physical‑chemical parameters: Total acidity: 5.3 g/l pH: 3.2 Reducing sugar / Baumé: 1.4 g/l
