This Horácio Simões Purple Moscatel appears to have been handled with almost medieval obsession. The grapes, meticulously limited to 2500 litres per hectare, were clearly lavished with such care – I suspect the Moscatel himself was basking in the sun. The five-day pre-fermentation maceration, utilising Armagnac brandy – a wonderfully bold detail – undoubtedly added a layer of complexity. The result is a concentrated wine, with an intensity that frankly makes me believe the Moscatel spent a very long conversation with a 6000-litre ageing tank during its five-month maturation. Ideal with aged cheeses or a generous serving of grilled white fish.
