This ten-year-old Malvasia madeira is clearly a veteran – it’s as if it’s just come back from a spirited debate with a smoker! The deep, almost unnervingly dark colour hints at the intense character within. Expect notes of rich, dried raisins, a pronounced smoky flavour, and a subtle brandy-like finish, much like a discerning Portuguese ambassador might enjoy – particularly paired with a classic clafoutis. Dates and figs offer a lovely sweetness, while spices provide a lingering, intelligent finish. A wonderfully generous and remarkably balanced wine, ideal with a rich almond cake or a classic custard pudding.
