It is said that Madeira wine’s main mentor was Infante D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape, originating from Candia in Crete, on the island of Madeira, which proved a success. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported along routes that included Europe, where it was considered highly refined, even used as a perfume for the ladies’ gloves at court. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are common in history, art, and the legends of some nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
