For 200 years Blandy’s Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeiran wine. Blandy is the only family that still owns and runs the original Madeira wine company founded by the trade’s founders. The family has played a key role in shaping the wine’s development, with members still living on Madeira and preserving a tradition that dates back to 1811. The Madeira Wine Company originally began as an association of several Madeiran wine‑producing companies that joined forces in 1913 to strengthen their buying and production capacities. During periods of discord, the family businesses of Blandy and Leacock merged, followed shortly by a dispute involving Miles and Cossart Gordon, creating the largest producer and exporter of Madeira. Regardless of size, preserving each company’s unique character and style remained central to the association’s focus. By the late 1970s the company’s ownership had narrowed to just a handful of the original families, with Blandy holding the controlling share. In 1989 Blandy invited the Symington family from Porto, Portugal, to partner in sales and marketing, a collaboration that continues today and keeps the Madeira Wine Company at the forefront of the Madeiran wine trade.
