The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating to 25 years after its discovery. On Madeira, vines are grown in small earth terraces called “poios,” supported by earth walls on steep mountain slopes that are often difficult to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with its production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unrivaled distinction over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are used for this fortified wine, the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia. The bottling year may not match the image shown.
