It is said that the principal mentor of Madeira wine was Prince D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originally from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved a success. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes that included Europe, where it was regarded as exceptionally refined, even being used as perfume for the ladies’ handkerchiefs of the court. The prestige of this nectar is such that references to it are common in history, the arts, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
