Legend has it that the main mentor of Madeira wine was Infante D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originating from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved to be a success. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes reaching Europe, where it was regarded as the epitome of refinement, even being used as a perfume for the court ladies’ handkerchiefs.
