Artur de Barros e Sousa Lda. was founded in 1890 by Pedro José Lomelino and has remained in the family ever since, with Artur and Edmundo Olim standing out as fourth‑generation descendants. It was the smallest Madeira wine producer on the island, annually producing between 8,000 and 10,000 litres, with a total storage capacity of 85,000 to 90,000 litres. Very few changes have been made to the estate over the years, making it a living museum. The Madeira wines of Artur de Barros e Sousa (ABSL) are delicate and almost fragile in structure, gaining a lot with age. In their youth they may seem simpler, but ageing increases their complexity and depth. In 2014, Artur de Barros e Sousa was acquired by the neighbouring Pereira D’Oliveira, the current owner of the company. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown (illustrative only).
