Description

The history of Madeira wine began shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years later. On Madeira Island, vineyards are grown in small earth plots known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on mountain slopes that are often difficult to access. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with the production process and the grape varieties cultivated, have contributed to Madeira wine’s unrivaled distinction over time. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
