The Artur de Barros e Sousa Lda. company was founded in 1890 by Pedro José Lomelino and has remained in the family ever since, with Artur and Edmundo Olim, descendants of the fourth generation, standing out. It was the smallest Madeira wine producer on the island, annually producing between 8,000 and 10,000 litres, with a total storage capacity of 85 to 90,000 litres. The changes made to this establishment over the years have been very few, making it a living museum. The Madeira wines of Artur de Barros e Sousa (ABSL) are delicate and almost fragile in structure, gaining a lot with age. In their youth they may seem simpler, but ageing increases their complexity and depth. In 2014, Artur de Barros e Sousa was acquired by neighboring Pereira D’Oliveira, the current owner.
