Very few producers—particularly in the production of Madeira wine—experience a revolution as significant as the one that occurred with Barbeito. Transitioning from a bulk wine supplier to a regional reference in Madeira wines is a remarkable achievement, especially given the strong competitors of the time. In 1991, Ricardo Freitas joined the family firm and, together with the Japanese Kinoshita partnership, set out to make Barbeito one of the most important Madeira wine producers. That same year a further pivotal change took place: for the first time, wine production was entrusted to a family member. Two years later, Ricardo carried out his first harvest entirely independently, laying the foundation for a team that shares the motto “produce quality wines with our own style.” The bottling year may not match the illustration shown.
