For 200 years, Blandy’s Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeiran wine. Blandy is the only family among all the founders of the Madeira wine trade that still owns and runs its original company. The family has played a key role in guiding the development of Madeira wine through its history, and its members remain on the island, upholding a tradition that dates back to 1811. The Madeira Wine Company originally formed in 1913 as an association of several Madeira wine producers who joined forces to strengthen their buying and production capabilities. During a period of discord, the former family companies of Blandy’s and Leacock merged, followed shortly thereafter by the involvement of Miles and Cossart Gordon, creating the largest producer and exporter of Madeira wine. Preserving each company’s unique character and style remained the association’s central focus. By the late 1970s, the company’s ownership had narrowed to only a handful of the original families, with the Blandy family holding the controlling stake. In 1989, needing to bolster sales and marketing, the Blandy family invited the Symington family from Porto to partner with them—a collaboration that continues today, enabling the Madeira Wine Company to lead the development of the Madeiran wine trade.
