For 200 years, Blandy’s Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeiran wine. Blandy is the only family among all the founders of the Madeira wine trade that still owns and runs its original company. The family has played a pivotal role in guiding the development of Madeira wine, and its members continue to live on the island, upholding a tradition that dates back to 1811. The Madeira Wine Company originally began as an association of several Madeira wine producers who joined forces to strengthen their purchasing and production capabilities. Founded in 1913, the association saw the old family businesses of Blandy and Leacock merge, followed by the resolution of disputes involving Miles and Cossart Gordon, creating the largest producer and exporter of Madeira wine. Regardless of size, preserving each company’s unique character and style was central to the association’s focus. By the late 1970s, the company’s interests had shrunk to only a handful of the original families, with the Blandys holding the controlling share. In 1989, needing to boost sales and marketing, the Blandys invited the Symington family from Porto, Portugal, to partner with them. This partnership has endured to the present day, enabling the Madeira Wine Company to lead the development of the Madeira wine trade. The bottling year may not match the image shown.
