Description

It is said that Prince Henry the Navigator was the chief mentor of Madeira wine, encouraging the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originally from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a move that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes reaching Europe, where it was regarded as the pinnacle of refinement, even used as perfume for the ladies’ handkerchiefs at court. The prestige of this nectar was such that it frequently appears in history, the arts, and the legends of several nations. The year of bottling may not match the image shown (illustrative only).
